Verdant vistas over Prague

Prague is a green city. There is a park, garden or clump of trees on every street corner. In the heart of the Žižkov district rises a hill by the name of Holy Cross, otherwise known as Parukářka Hill.
On this rocky outcrop, a park largely ignored by tourists looks out over the sprawling metropolis below. Up there, you are rewarded with superb, uninterrupted views of the city. There is a playground too where kids can let off steam, whether on the seemingly never-ending slide or on the climbing wall.

Climb up to Beton Beach; this popular bar with its terrace is a great place to hang out. This unusual find has an off-beat kind of atmosphere with its graffiti-strewn walls and salvaged furnishings.

Infiltrating underground Prague

As you stroll around the park on Parukářka Hill, you cannot help but notice the strange air vents rising out of the ground. What on earth can they hide? An underground car park? A shopping centre? In actual fact, lurking beneath your feet is the former nuclear shelter, Bezovka. Built in the 1950s, the largest bunker in Prague could accommodate 5,000 people, 20 metres below the surface.

This unlikely place is now home to a one-of-a-kind museum that traces stories of espionage and the legendary personalities involved. Welcome to the turbulent times of the Cold War. If chills and thrills are your thing, then book your visit in advance. Descend into a labyrinth of dismal concrete corridors. With an experienced guide at your side, you will discover what life was like in Czechoslovakia at a time when it was cut off from the rest of the world.

The hills are alive with the sound of… festivals

If you prefer a warmer sort of atmosphere, then every year the hill hosts a beer-tasting festival. In 2018, the event is taking place on 1 and 2 June and will focus on local beer-makers showcasing their brewing processes and, of course, the finished product too.

In springtime, the hill reverberates to the sound of music. Local artistes perform dozens of rock concerts in almost three days of non-stop festivities. It will make your stay in Prague truly unforgettable.
