When the unusual and ecology go hand in hand
What would you say if you could reach out and touch the beautiful scenery of the island of Mauritius? All around you, the views of the lake overlooking the vacoas, those huge parasol-shaped plants, make you want to laze around in your cosy bed. You have just spent a wonderful night in a spherical, transparent room at the Bubble Lodge, at one with nature. The bubbles have no solid structure which accentuates the impression of closeness to the environment. This innovative accommodation is nestled away in the tea plantations of Bois Chéri, the most famous tea estate on Mauritius and found in the south of the island. Further to the east, there is another Bubble Lodge tucked away under a sprawling banyan tree on Deer Island, a tiny offshore island with an air of paradise on earth.
Eco-friendly, these bubbles are made from recyclable materials and do not use much energy, despite their welcome air conditioning. The bathroom is bathed in light, making you feel like you are taking a shower in the middle of a forest! The carefully selected decor marries teak and natural fabrics for a comforting effect. There, everything is natural.
A lodge in the heart of a tea plantation
Today, after breakfast in your bubble at Bois Chéri, you have organised a visit to the plantations that surround your accommodation. Out in the fields, the pickers are harvesting the tea leaves. At the factory, you will learn about the process of making this tea which is famous throughout the world. There then follows a tasting of the house speciality, a black tea flavoured with vanilla. Once the last visitors have left, the plantation once again belongs to the bubble residents. This is the time when the animals often make an appearance in the undergrowth. From your Bubble Lodge, you may be lucky enough to spot a deer and her fawns. In the evening, the estate restaurant stays open for your dining pleasure.
And a delectable dinner is certainly on the menu: fresh palm heart salad with smoked marlin, followed by green tea chicken and a tea sorbet for dessert. Pleasantly fulfilled, head back to your magical cocoon. Switch off all the lights as soon as you can, lay down on your bed, look up at the sky and gaze at the stars above. This celestial wonder will watch over you as you drift off to the land of Nod.

Sunset over the lagoon
Next day, you are off to another bubble of paradise, around 50 kilometres from Bois Chéri. You are soon dropped off in the middle of an uninhabited Eden surrounded by entrancing scenery: this is Deer Island. From your new room, you can step out onto a private beach running down to the warm waters of a lagoon. No one can ever resist a swim surrounded by all this nature. That is, unless the nearby golf course lures you away for a few swings on the vast green expanses of the tiny island. When evening comes, the orange glow of the setting sun reflects on the surface of the lake. A heavenly backdrop to lull you to sleep on your last night on the island of Mauritius.
