Kalú: the pleasures of gathering together

At once a trendy restaurant and a ‘caféothèque' dedicated to Costa Rican products, this address is also distinguished by its sleek Zen design in a beautifully restored1950s' house.

Camille Ratton, a young Franco-Costa Rican chef, is passionate about Asian, Mediterranean, and Creole cuisine: they converge in the dishes she creates for Kalú, which means ‘meeting place' in the native language of Panama. Adept with quality products, she offers salmon and tuna ceviche or baked eggs for starters,Thai chicken or a mushroom risotto for the main, and, for dessert, a trio of crèmesbrûlées or panna cottas, a cheesecake with strawberries and balsamic vinegar, or a tarte tatin.

Conviviality is also expressed through sharedtapas (falafel, tacos, naans, patatas bravas) and space organised around a beautifully planted and furnished patio, with white walls, light wood, and contemporary paintings. Kalú is open for lunch and dinner during the week (closed Mondays), breakfast, brunch, and dinner on Saturdays, and breakfast and brunch on Sundays. Itsadjoining Caféothèque offers a fine selection of national coffees and enhances ‘coffee culture'... in every sense of the term.
