HafenCity: the district of the future

Between the shore and the waves, these new streets are shaping the landscape of tomorrow with buildings that look like they are part of a giant Lego set.

HafenCity is a city within a city. One of Europe's largest urban development projects, built on the banks of the Elbe, this new district extends Speicherstadt and will increase the area of the city centre some 40% by 2025. Buildings seem to be popping up overnight, except perhaps, the Elbphilharmonie, which is definitely taking its time.

No matter: this spectacular achievement by the firm Herzog & de Meuron is a technical and architectural wonder. Placed on the structure of a former cocoa warehouse, its wave-shaped roof is the new symbol of the city. The concert calendar opens in January 2017. All around, other architects have left their signature marks, such as the late Zaha Hadid, who designed the beautiful promenade along the waterfront, and Rem Koolhaas, who designed the Hamburg Science Center. Lovers of beautiful cars should stop in at the Automuseum Prototyp, which displays rare and vintage sports cars.
