Clouds: close to paradise

At 105 metres, the highest Hamburg restaurant offers incredible views of the harbour, the old district of Hamburg, and St Pauli.

High aloft in the dancing towers (‘Tanzende Türme') of architect Hadi Teherani, Clouds is aptly named, as it rubs right up against them. The elevator to the 23rd floor sets the tone as it passes through a ceiling covered with cumulus. Arriving at your destination, the whole city, or almost all of it, is laid out before you. The Elbphilharmonie sits proudly on the waves and the Reeperbahn, by day, suddenly seems calmer. It's difficult to detach one's eyes from the huge bay windows (ask when you book if it's possible to have a table close to one).

Unable to compete with the view, the decor plays the card of discretion. Broad leatherette chairs are the only original touch. In the room, the aproned servers serve beautiful cuts of meat, the house specialty, as well as cod and spelt risotto, equally tantalizing. In fine weather, the roof patio on the 24th floor is transformed into the Heaven's Nest bar.
