A walk in Beihai Park

A walk in Beihai Park

Next to the Forbidden City, Beijing offers an oasis of water and greenery.

A long, beautiful walk awaits you within the 68 hectares of Beihai Park, with a 39-hectare lake taking pride of place. This imperial garden is more than 1,000 years old, its construction having begun under the Liao dynasty, but the majority of the buildings date from the time of the Qing, from the middle of the 15th century.

Let yourself go in this immense natural setting and travel back in time. On the central islet reigns the emblem of the park: the White Pagoda, a white stupa erected to show the support of the Shunzhi Emperor for Buddhism. As you walk through the park, you can admire the Jing'an Temple, "temple of eternal peace", the Round City, the Nine-Dragon wall, the Five-Dragon Pavilion, the Quieting Heart Room for meditation, the botanical garden and even a tree planted during the Tang dynasty (618-907).

In the summer, rent a boat to sail quietly on the lake and, in winter, imitate the Beijing residents who will be playing on the ice.
