Founded in 1565 by Portuguese colonists, Rio de Janeiro was a colony that belonged to the Kingdom of Portugal. In fact, it was the kingdom's capital during the Napoleonic invasion. During the 18th century, the discovery of diamond and gold mines near the city contributed to the city's development and it became a strategic location. Like many large cities in the world, Rio de Janeiro is a city of many very contrasting facets.
The city of Rio de Janeiro is also world famous for its vast beaches, like those in Copacabana (80 km) and Ipanema, as well as for the very moving statue of Cristo Redentor. Also, nearly one million visitors come to experience the Carnival in Rio, one of the most famous in the world during which different samba schools parade.
The city is not far from the Tropic of Capricorn and has a tropical climate with a yearly average temperature of 24°C. Summer in Rio de Janeiro is between December and March and is more humid than the winter season from June to September.
